Occurrence: In iron-manganese ore deposits and associated skarns.

England; Sweden; France; Japan.
Tamworth. NS.W. Australia: small Mn deposits with massive tephroite streaks in rhodonite.

Name: From the Greek tephros, meaning ash colored.
